At the outset, I’m not a security or privacy expert. But there are three categories of activity you are probably using OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
As a direct user through your browser.
As an API user.
As a third-party user (probably through the API).
Using ChatGPT in a Browser
If you use ChatGPT through your browser, your data is being used for future model training and analytics. If you don’t like that, you should opt-out using this form. OpenAI will notify you when your account has been insulated from their probing eyes.
Using OpenAI through APIs
There’s no indication of opt-in or out when creating an API key. However, the opt-in process requires this form, which I suspect will never be used. Since March 1, 2023, OpenAI has considered the API off-limits to data capture or repurposing your information for any purpose.
Third Parties
There’s no telling what an aggregator of SaaS service might do when playing the role of a proxy to OpenAI’s APIs. Would they trade your data for lower-priced inferencing? Possibly. You need to investigate the policy with any providers of AI inferencing.
Summary
If you use OpenAI web apps and want to avoid allowing your data to be captured and used for training models, complete this form. This, in my view, is advised.
Complete this form if you’re nutty enough to allow all API-based conversations with OpenAI services to capture and use your data. This, in my view, is ill-advised.
